Roasted almonds – Making almonds taste 10 times better #12/47
Recipe – Roasted almonds
Ingredients: (enough to fill one baking plate)
400 grams of ordinary almonds with skin on
Instructions:
- Cook the almonds in water for 5 minutes.
- Pour the cooked almonds in a colander to drain the hot water out and rinse the almonds with cold tap water.
- If you need the almonds to look pretty you can deskin them by squishing them with your fingers individually. This is very time consuming, so I prefer not to unless I absolutely need it like for using the baked almonds in a dessert.
- Now if you need to make both salted and non-salted almonds, take apart the almonds you want to salt in a separate mixer bowl and salt them with finely grained salt. Steer them around and give them some more salt.
- The salted almonds are spread on baking paper on a baking plate and roasted in an oven at 200 degrees Celsius or 392 degrees Fahrenheit for about 20 minutes or until they are slightly browned throughout the almond. You can see if the almonds are browned to your likings by taking one out of the oven and slice through it with a knife.
- Almonds that are deskinned do not need to be cut to see if they are roasted enough as they will have the same color on the outside as on the inside.
Important observations:
You may object to cooking the almonds that are roasted in an oven with their skin on because that might be an unnecessary step. You could be right. My argument to cook the almonds regardless of not deskinning them is that the cooking definitely is cleaning a whole lot of dirt off the almonds that I do not want to eat, as the almonds could be treated with chemicals on the surface that make them last longer. I figure almonds that are first boiled and then cleaned with tap water may simply be healthier to eat than eating almons with skin on that are not cleaned that way. However, I could be wrong on that assumption, and I have not read any convincing scientific evidence to confirm it. But as they say better safe than sorry. New science-based studies may one day conclude that there are significant health benefits from cleaning almonds first by boiling them.
